Hunting Bow FAQs

Why are crossbows illegal in most places?

Anywhere that has gun control has crossbow control mostly due to their similarity in firing. A cross bow is not nearly as lethal as a gun, but it is still a lethal weapon, but so is a spoon in certain situations. I’m going to start a debate on arms control, but the device is not dangerous in and of itself. 99% of crossbows are used for hunting, but to use one for hunting you would have to get a special disabled persons permit and hunting liscense. You are not disabled you say. That’s too bad, you won’t be able to use a crossbow until you are so enfeebled that you wouldn’t be able to use a regular bow. This is pretty much the norm where it is allowed at all, many places have them completely outlawed. Weapons don’t kill anything, people do.

How does a compound bow work?

Like all bows, power is stored in the limbs as the drawstring is tensioned, when the string is released the limbs return to their original shape propeling the arrow towards the target. The difference with a compound bow is a set of pulleys and cams at the end of the limbs connecting the drawstring. When the string is drawn roughly 50% an amazing thing happens called “let off” which reduces the force required to hold the bow drawn. A regular longbow requires just as much force to pull as it does to hold which can greatly tire an archer and decrease accuracy. The pulleys also increase the amount of force available due to shorter and stiffer limbs.

Some interesting archery facts:

1900 was the first year archery was included in the modern Olympic games, but it was included in the ancient games and is as old as hunting itself. It was discontinued in 1924, then reintroduced in 1972. Today the arrows travel faster than 200 miles per hour towards targets 77 yard away with only 40 seconds to fire each arrow which has the archers initials engraved onto it for record keeping. Taxofily is another name for archery. Splitting an arrow down the shaft is still known as a “Robin Hood” after his famous archery skills.
