How to Hunt Caribou?

Ground stalking near paths used by these animals is one of the most practical bowhunting methods. Because most of the country is barren ground, the archer is able to locate caribou from afar. He can set up an ambush and wait for the caribou to pass by. For the true sportsman, still hunting is quite a challenge in itself. It is you who must calculate the best ambush site. Because the trees are too small, tree-stands can not be used.

What Bow Weight do you Recommend?

The bow for taking large bulls should preferably have a draw
weight of 60 to 70 pounds.
|

Which Type of Hunting Arrow do you Recommend?

Any aluminum, carbon or wood arrow will
do just fine. They should be mounted with bright colored fletching only when
the archer uses a "Cat Quiver" like backquiver, otherwise dark or camo
fletching is better because bright fletchings can spook caribou from afar. Spray
feather fletchings with water-proofing like silicone.

The weather is usually warm with many sunny days during August. Beginning of September is cooler while bad weather really comes in by the end of September. That's why the hunting season ends around September 29th in Schefferville. By then, weather conditions are getting bad and chances to get stuck in camp for days are just too high. As a matter of fact, the floatplane base is closing down for the season by the first days of October.

What's the Average Shooting Distance?

Although shots are often taken at close range, the
archer should be able to hit his mark at 35 yards. In other words, I recommend
you to practice seriously at this yardage. Even better, if you can hit your target
consistently at 50 yards, you'll have an extra edge over the older bulls, always
harder to fool.

license is approx. $ 100.00 US
