Frequently Asked Questions About Bowhunting in Canada

What are your success rates?
Super Caribou Bull Well, this is THE big question! It is like paying big bucks to get access to a select golf course and expecting to score like a champion. It is obvious that one will only be as good as his own skills are. What goes for golfing counts for bowhunting. As a true sportman and since you choose to hunt "the hard way," you are aware from the start that you'll NEVER be as successful with a bow as you would with a rifle. Hunting with bow and arrows is tough, misses are common, chances to blew the hunt during the last crucial minutes are even higher, guided or not. As experience showed us, a good hunter will normally be successful. If you are in this category, your chances to fill your tag on an organized hunt are high. Now, let's go back to our success rates again. Well, sometimes we do achieve 100% success on bow kills, but that's rather an exception and although very proud about it, we won't get too excited. More realistically, we are satisfied if we are within 40 to 60%, that makes us feel that we did a good job. I also like to underline that our shooting opportunities are usually three times higher than the actual "killing rates."

In general, non-residents don't need to produce their home hunter's certificate when buying a hunting license in Canada. However, it is always recommended to have one.
Exception: Manitoba does require a Hunter Education Course certificate or similar.

Do you have rifle hunters in your bowhunting camps?
Generally speaking no, as we are specialized in archery-only hunts, we don't mix rifle hunters with bowhunters. However, there are a few exceptions. For instance, our guides have their rifle in camp, both to protect the camp from marauder bears and occasionally to give the "coup de grace" to a wounded animal. Also, if you book a whole camp, it will be up to you to accept or not a rifle hunter among your group, providing that your hunt takes place during the general hunting season and not during the bow-only season.

Can I bring my handgun on a hunt in Canada?
No, don't even think about it!

Torphy Hunter and cougar Can I take my trophy back home?
Of course you can, in case of an animal listed on the Endangered Species List (C.I.T.E.S) such as black bear, grizzly and cougar, we will take care of the mandatory export procedure. In any case, we will assist you in registering your trophies at the local Fish and Game Department's office.

When should I book my hunt?
As soon as possible, hunting seasons are generally short and openings are always limited. For some species, there are only a few hunting licenses available each year and their hunts might be fully booked for 2 or 3 years ahead.
Usually, a 30% deposit is required in order to secure your hunt (it can be 50% for species like grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, etc.)
