Hunting Rifle
We recommend a rifle with some power in its belly when hunting black bears in Canada. A 30.06 is my own choice of caliber, but anything over that is good too. It is however not needed to get overpowered neither. Heavy bullets og 185+ grains are also recommended for large large black bears.
Black Powder
.54 is the best choice for hunting black bear.
Archery Equipment
The
hunting bow required for taking a large bruin should have a draw weight of 60
to 70 pounds at 28".
The most efficient and deadly hunting arrow should be heavy. Arrows should be
mounted with bright coloured fletching, white also shows up well against black
fur of the bear. Easton XX75 shafts sizes of 2020, 2117, 2216, 2315 are
recommended. Traditional archers generally prefer wood arrows mounted with
solid Snuffer or Zwickey broadheads.
What Bear Hunter Should Keep In Mind!
Penetration and pin-point accuracy is the name of the game when it comes to bear hunting. Concentrate on your ability to deliver a heavy arrow through both lungs. A fast arrow speed is not necessary. Hunting Broadheads
Should be 125 grains or more mounted with 2, 3 or 4 razor-sharp blades.
A sharp cutting tip is also very important to maximise penetration.
The broadhead must be strong to remain in one piece after cutting thick
hide, layers of fat. Strong muscles, rubber-like sinew lungs and cartilage.
Mechanical style broadheads with blades that open on contact are not
recommended for hunting bears. A large broadhead and complete pass
through is very important to ensure a good exit hole. Black bears
are very difficult to blood-trail because exit wounds will soon be
blocked by fat and thick fur. Also the bears soft feet leave very
little sign and even a mortally wounded bear will walk for miles before
laying down.
