Archery Bow

An archery bow traditionally was made of wood, pine being a preferred ancient building material, with a durable string, called a bowstring, tightly tensioned between the two ends. When the handle is gripped by an archer an arrow can be placed onto the bowstring. As the archer pulls the string back it creates a great deal of force which when released propels the arrow forward.

There are many factors that change how effective an archery bow will be. The stiffness and elasticity of the wood or composite material used greatly impacts the draw weight which is the amount of force required to use the bow properly. The shape of the bow plays a big factor as well with strait bows, compound bows, re-curves, and de-curves bows each having different characteristics.

When looking for an archery bow, consider the quality of the bow, the speed of the bow, accuracy, forgiveness and aesthetics. For bow hunting the bow should be durable and well built but these would not be ideal for target practice. The speed of the bow is how fast the arrow is propelled, a faster arrow allows for stronger, further shots but loses some accuracy.
